ROANOKE, VA – December 3, 2024 – It is with heavy hearts that the principals and employee owners share the sad news of the passing of our founder, J. Wayne Craig.
Wayne passed away on the evening of December 2 in Roanoke, VA, at the age of 84.
Wayne and Edwin Mattern cofounded Mattern & Craig Consulting Engineers and Surveyors in Roanoke in February 1978. After Mr. Mattern’s untimely passing in 1982 at the age of 32, Wayne continued onward and upward, leading the firm until his retirement. After 27 years of building Mattern & Craig into a leading engineering firm, not to mention numerous moves, countless miles, and thousands of sales calls, Wayne retired from the firm in 2005.
Through Wayne’s bold vision and leadership, Mattern & Craig has grown exponentially over the years. Still headquartered in Roanoke, VA., the firm’s footprint now stretches from offices in Kingsport and Johnson City, TN, Asheville, and Hickory, NC, to Charleston, SC, to efficiently serve clients throughout the Southeastern U.S.
Wayne was a licensed professional engineer, practicing in multiple states. He was a graduate of Virginia Tech and served on many civic clubs, community and professional boards in multiple states, and he faithfully served his church in many capacities. Following his retirement, Wayne became active on many boards and commissions in the Town of Abingdon and went on to be elected to the Town Council and Mayor.
The employee-owners of Mattern & Craig mourn his passing and share our condolences with Wayne’s family and friends. Arrangements are currently incomplete and will be announced in the coming days.
