SR-3174/SR-1501 Idlewild Road Widening, Interchange & Intersection Improvements & Roundabout Design Utilizing the NCDOT Complete Streets Concept
Provide preliminary design analysis and turn-key design services for the widening of approximately 1.65 miles of Idlewild Road. Project begins north of I-485 at Barney Road and extends south through the existing interchange at I-485 to SR-1524 Stevens Mill Road in Mecklenburg and Union Counties. The design includes an urban roundabout, diverging diamond interchange at I-485, RCUTs (restricted crossing u-turn intersections) / J-turns, and sidewalks employing NCDOT’s Complete Streets concept.
Services for this project include survey, planning, environmental documentation, roadway design, stormwater design, traffic control, erosion control, traffic signalization, retaining wall design, utility relocation and design and permitting.
The original project consisted of the widening of Idlewild Road only from the south ramps of I-485 to Stevens Mill Road approximately .65 miles. The project scope was later expanded by the client, NCDOT – Division 10, to include the additional widening and major intersection and interchange improvements from Barney Road south to include the redesign of the interchange at I-485. This expanded scope increased the project length by approximately 1 mile and added the innovative Complete Streets concepts to improve the overall capacity of the corridor and improve safety for all modes of transportation.
